Rivian warns of delays for EVs with biggest battery and smallest price
Rivian pushed back the most expensive and farthest configuration of electric pickup trucks and SUVs, warning reservation holders of R1S and R1T that they could face another year waiting if they remained with their original choices. The delivery of two EV is now ongoing, although in small quantities, but Rivian has more than 70,000 preorders to do.
Early Launch R1T edition – The first electrical pickup configuration, well-determined Rivian – start shipping in advance, with the first R1S launch edition SUV claimed by the CEO of the car maker, RJ Sparting, itself. While the number of events sent is still low, and Rivian has prioritized employees to work better through route-tele software, the promise is a significant ramp-up in 2022.
Today, in an email to the reservation holder posted back to Reddit, Scaring set some new expectations besides dropping some additional details. On December 15, CEO wrote, “We have around 71,000 preorders for R1T and R1 in the US and Canada.” From it, the “big majority” chose to trim adventure packages, with a large Rivian package battery.
The battery was rated for 314 miles from driving by EPA for R1T, while the R1S SUV was rated a total of 316 miles.
Rivian also has a maximum package battery, which costs $ 10,000 more but promises 400+ miles out of reach. But the configuration – although available for reservation holders to choose – is not expected to enter production until later in 2022. Now, said Scinginge, that the timeline has been pushed back.
“To serve the largest number of preorder holders, we will prioritize building adventure packages with large battery packages during the following year,” he wrote via email. “Explore the Preorder package and vehicle with the max package battery configuration.”
Unexpectedly, Scaring also confirmed several details of the reservation. Of about 71,000 preorders, only about 20% for the Max package battery.
Rivian will reach these customers – who, the CEO who recognizes, can put the reservation as far as 2018 – in January, with offers changing their preorder to the R1T or R1S adventure package with a large battery pack. That way, they can receive shipping around 2022. If they choose not to switch, it can mean waiting until the following year before they get their new eV.
Not only those who want a larger battery that might be frustrated today. Adventure package is a more expensive Rivian trim, with R1T starting from $ 73,000 before incentives for that configuration. Explore packages, meanwhile, starting at $ 67,500, but those who hope to save $ 5,500 now also have to wait longer to get their EV.
There are more than just patience stretched at risk. All eyes lights up just how the Biden Biden Administration framework can develop incentives around electric vehicles, and modify the current $ 7,500 Federal Tax Credit which is enjoyed by R1T and R1S. Although the plan is to increase the number, the right amount will also depend on factors such as where EV is produced and the nature of the workforce.
